Fourth World Congress of Environmental History – 18–23 August 2024

The Fourth World Congress of Environmental History was held in Oulu, Finland from 19 to 23 August, 2024. This congress was the largest World Congress of Environmental History to date, the largest event ever at the University of Oulu, and it hosted 973 delegates (753 in person, 220 online).

The Third World Congress of Enviornmental History (Convergences: The Global South and the Global North in the Era of Great Acceleration) took place July 22-26, 2019 at the campus of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Florianópolis, Brazil.

Second World Congress of Environmental History – 8–12 July 2014

The Second World Congress of Environmental History took place July 8-12, 2014. The event was hosted in the cultural capital of Europe 2012, the beautiful northern Portuguese town of Guimarães. The conference was co-sponsored by the University of Minho and the International School Congress/International Workshop on Environmental History group (ISC/IWEH). The theme of the Congress, ‘Environmental History in the Making’, aimed to create synergy among all scholars engaged in environmental history, to fathom the reach of the field and to investigate its focus areas and theoretical underpinnings.

First World Congress of Environmental History – 4–8 August 2009

This series of World Congresses began in 2009, when ICEHO was a co-sponsor of the First World Congress of Environmental History held in Copenhagen, Denmark, August 4-8, 2009. The congress brought together more than 500 scholars from all over the globe, giving them a unique opportunity of to learn from each other and to create an overarching picture of the relationship of people and the environment through time.
